Lower displacement risk (but not immune)

Corporate reskilling programs have a poor track record. Most fail because they teach skills that are already commoditized by the time the training ends. For AI-era reskilling, focus on capabilities that compound rather than capabilities that will be automated next.
- System thinking. The ability to understand how components interact, identify failure modes, and design for resilience. This is the last thing agents will master and the first thing organizations need more of.
- AI orchestration. Practical skills in directing agents: writing effective prompts, designing multi-agent workflows, debugging agent failures, and evaluating output quality. This is immediately valuable and will remain valuable through the entire transition.
- Domain expertise. Deep knowledge of your specific industry, customers, and regulatory environment. Agents are general-purpose. The people who can translate between what agents can do and what your specific business needs are irreplaceable in the near term.
- Judgment under uncertainty. When the data is ambiguous, the stakeholders disagree, and the right answer is not obvious, humans still outperform agents. Train people to make decisions with incomplete information and communicate their reasoning.
Avoid reskilling programs focused on specific tools or platforms. Those have a shelf life measured in months. Focus on meta-skills that persist across tool generations.

Gartner projects that by 2028, one-third of business software will contain agent functions. This is not a prediction about cutting-edge companies. This is a prediction about the mainstream.
